You owe your life to a Trumpet

We had a nice slow morning of the boys playing on the Wii, Huffle going to the Tire for expanding foam to fill in the Mouse holes and me knitting my Christmas Stocking. Huffle and I also wrapped a present we bought for the boys so that it is out of sight.

Huffle and the boys watched the football. We briefly skyped Grandma who was trying to buy a present for the boys online.

This afternoon we walked to the Legion to take part in the Remembrance Day service. Both boys were there as Beavers and Cubs. While we were discussing what Remembrance day was all about, we were talking about Grandad Ic and how he was in the war. Huffle said "you owe your life to a trumpet" and then explained that if Grandad Ic hadn't been called to join the concert party, he could have been fighting and then killed, therefore the boys wouldn't have been born. They thought that it was funny that they were alive because of a trumpet.

We wrapped up warm and walked to the Legion. It was cold, slightly wet and very windy. Once we got there we deposited the boys and toyed with the idea to leave them there and have a walk around the Hamlet but we decided to stay. It was full. We were told to be there for 1:45 for it to start at 2pm but we didn't as we didn't want to be hanging around in the cold. Thank goodness we didn't. It was mostly inside but it didn't start until at least 2:20pm. We stood for a piper in a kilt! In a kilt in this weather? Then it was 'Oh Canada'. A prayer, a poem or two, a long speech by a man with a foreign name who wasn't a great speaker in my opinion, I felt like he was reading to a toddler! Then another speech by a man who kept adding silences. He was a very good speaker but I wondered if he kept falling asleep. He also told us many times that Canada was a great nation and we were lucky to be living there (I don't think he was talking to us in particular though). Another prayer, another song and presentations to the poster winners. Smallest received 2nd place and won $20. He also got to take part in the Honour Roll and placed two poppies on the cross. The names on the roll were very very English. The last song was God save the Queen. Huffle and I stood and sang (it was the only one we sang) and we silently cheered at the end (like we used to at the football).

We ended up outside watching the laying of the wreaths and the lowering of the Canadian Flag. Celebrity lookalikes we saw today were 'Blanket' (Michael Jackson's baby) and Wee Jimmy Cranky. There were refreshments at the end but Huffle made us run away back to the safety of home so he didn't have to talk to anyone. It was very cold on the way home as the wind was blowing into us and the rain/sleet/hail hurt!

Once home, we had a hot drink, biscuit and got ourselves warm. Huffle filled in the mouse holes (shook his fist at them and set more traps - he thinks he's stopped them now!). We had dinner and then played Pokemon. In this house it is always the smallest person who starts the games. Huffle asked me if I looked forward to one day being the smallest person in our house. The rate the kids are growing, that won't be long will it! I wonder if my name will change to Smallest and the kids will become Longer and Longest? 50 minutes later and Smallest had won the Pokemon Master award from Grandad. He wanted to Skype him but it was midnight there and we didn't think he would appreciate it.

The boys watched a bit of TV before an early night of bed. Both are looking tired. Both are very sensitive now. Smallest hasn't been complaining of earrache today and Small hasn't mentioned his legs. I think Huffle and I will be having an early night too although we are feeling much better. I can't stop sneezing and blowing my nose but at least my head is finally clear.
