Perry goes Large

I was woken by the bloomin' water softener again, this time at 4am. Aarrrgggghhhhh. Huffle didn't sleep well at all. When we woke properly it had snowed and was still snowing. Oh no, not snow already.

It carried on snowing for most of the day but it wasn't a great amount. The sun came out and started to melt it. We skyped Moo and she was disappointed it hadn't waited for her arrival. We skyped Grandma and got to see CousinD's new boots. The signal wasn't good.

We all played on the Wii and then Huffle watched football and ironed his shirts and I went and finished some crafts off.

While we had lunch we watched a bit of a film, then we played Ghostly Galleon and Lego Creationary. Everyone got ready, with thermals, gloves, hats etc. the boys went outside to check if they were warm enough and had a snowball fight too. We had been invited to the Santa Parade at Port Perry and for dinner afterwards at NoCustard's house.

Drew came round and we all went off to Port Perry. It had stopped snowing but it started again just for the parade. It was magical and Christmassy.

Drew (and her tissue face!), Small and Smallest
Waiting for the parade. It was cold
When is it going to start?
The kids got some balloons and then we met up with NoCustard and Umbrella
A couple of marching bands, some floats, a biker church gang, lots of sweets and candy canes
Then he came............Santa.........and he looked over at us and said "another year eh Umbrella?". I said DID HE JUST SAY YOUR NAME? "Oh Yes" said Umbrella, "I know everyone!" WOW. Impressive.

This was our cue to leave. NoCustard and Umbrella went one way and we walked the other armed with lots of sweets and NoCustards address. We found their lovely house. It was very welcoming. We had some homemade soda bread and cheese (Irish Cheese of course), Christmassy music, decorations outside. Lots of chatting. TeaLady's husband, Morton, was there. There were eight of us to dinner. We started with a homemade soup. Tomato and Lentil or Butternut with homemade pumpkin seed bread, then Pulled Pork, Beef Stew, Lentil Loaf and a Brocolli, rice and cheese dish that was heavenly. I ended up coming away with half of the lentil loaf - it was delicious with a homemade chutney. We had a flourless very rich Chocolate cake and orange cake for dessert with raspberries, cream, ice cream. OMG I ate so much, I thought I was going to pop. The kids had a fabulous time. NoCustard had put a bag on the table for them with a pad of paper, pen, pencil and a tube of sweets. They both wrote little notes to say thank you.

The company was brilliant, the food excellent and it was a shame we had to go home to put the kids to bed.

Huffle drove us home, we dropped Drew off, put the kids to bed, had a cup of tea and went to bed ourselves. very Tired!!!

Les Trois Petit Couchons

Everyone slept. HURRAH. I woke up to Huffle wearing his cricket top and a Stoke scarf wrapped round his neck. I wondered if I was in some bizarre dream. In reality, it was 'wear your favourite sports item' at work today. I doubt anyone else will be wearing the same as him.

The boys chatted to me at breakfast. Small told us that his class was doing a French version of The Three Little Pigs and he was going to be the Narrator, WOW, in French, clever boy. I checked over his homework and it was great. Full of detail, nicely presented. He showed me his Maths test he had done, 26/26. I think we are back on track. Thank goodness. I am very proud. Smallest had to take in something to school today that had an 's' in the middle or end, he has surpassed himself and found SCISSORS. He thinks he has beat the record. One at the beginning, one at the end and two in the middle, he is very pleased. However, when he came home he said that his teacher said he was wrong. The item he bought in was SCISSOR and he should have brought in another pair to make SCISSORS. Uh I don't think so. Unless the Canadian version of a pair of scissors is different. I'm a bit annoyed as he left the house feeling really proud of himself. I told him we thought he was right and we were all proud of him.

It rained today. 10* but rainy. The forecast for the next five days is snow, snow, snow, sun (2*), snow. Huffle went out about 6pm ish and he said it was trying to snow!!

The boys went off to school, I tidied up, put some washing on, had a quick swiff and dust and then got ready to go out to my knitting group. I haven't been for five weeks, and in that five weeks I have knitted about 2" of sock. Whoops, I wondered if they would notice? I got ready, quickly skyped Grandma and Grandad and then went to my knitting group. It was great. Good coffee, good company, I got to knit a heel of my sock but now I have come to a standstill because I need to pick up stitches and this is the part where I normally pass it to Moo, but I can't wait that long so I will put it back on my desk and take it along in two weeks time and El the knitting lady can show me properly.

I came home, hungry, had lunch, dried the washing and went out to the supermarket. I walked around in a daze. I was so tired. I picked up a few things I needed. Went to Bulk Barn for some stuff and then Dollarama for some other stuff (so secretive but I'm Christmas shopping, say no more!). I drove home, had a cup of tea, put the shopping away and waited for the boys to come home.

I think it is even starting to look like a sock now!

The boys came home, they had a quick snack, grabbed swimming stuff and off we went. It is really hard to dress correctly. It is cold and wet outside and yet when you walk into swimming, you have to take off your shoes and socks and it is really really warm in there. I took my crochet, Small took his DS and Smallest swam. He did very well. Swimming on his side, swimming with his face in the water, diving in, jumping in. He looked like he had a great time. Small's thumb has healed really well and he has full movement in it so it won't be long before he is having lessons again.

Huffle rang me from his favourite shop (The Tire) he found a bargain. A big box of saucepans which can be used on the new Induction Cooker. It was such a good deal that the staff had hidden the last box but Huffle sniffed it out! He was home before we were today so he got our dinner ready. We all had dinner together, there was a lot of silliness at the dinner table this evening. Huffle was talking to them about football, mascots, nicknames etc. Huffle was telling them about Hartlepool, a long time ago, and why they were called the 'chimp chokers'. Smallest looked at him and said "was that in 1983?". I won't tell the story because you probably know it but if you do want to know, leave me a comment and I will tell the story.

Small took his homework in today and his teacher said she was very happy as it looked like he had put a lot of effort in it and it was very neat and detailed.

All of us played Table Tennis. Small is getting better. Smallest really needs to grow a bit so the balls don't keep hitting him on his nose! Huffle put them to bed, read them stories and then had a bath. He is feeling tired today. I watched TV and crocheted with my mug of tea and a Decadent biscuit - ummmmmm.

I wrote a bit yesterday about beating Huffle at Table Tennis etc etc, it was a lie. I put that in to wind him up because he proof-reads this normally for me. He read it, said HA HA, I posted, we played, he won as usual, then later on he said "did you take out that bit about you winning and being King" NO, whoops, I thought you did! Oh well, one day I will win and be king! (The 'King' part came about when we went to Tuscany years before the the children arrived. We had a table tennis in our Cottage and every time Huffle won, he would wrap a towel around his shoulders and parade around like a King. When we went to Northern Italy a few years ago with the kids, we had a table tennis there too. We would do the same. I bought a huge Union Flag the other day (bargain), once he knows where I have put it, no doubt this is what he will parade around in every time he wins!

Painted Foot

Last night, Huffle and I watched The Voice. It was hilarious. Ceelo Green and his team of three other men (including our favourite that we call Jesus) sang Staying Alive.

The water softener didn't wake us last night, a loud bang and a crash woke us at 2am. We both got out of bed to investigate. We couldn't find anything at all - curious. Luckily I went back to sleep straight away, Huffle didn't. He was awake until 3.30am. Oh dear, he will be tired today.

Huffle caught another mouse.

Smallest had to take something in to school that had the letter i in it. A soft i not a hard i. He chose Tissue. He put his tissue in his important bag and then asked me how to spell it. I asked him how he thought it was spelt and he said t-i-s-h-u. When I told him how to spell it correctly I said to pretend he was very posh in England and say "please could you pass me a tissue". He thought this was very funny. All the boys went off today leaving me to paint the cupboards. I had breakfast, rang the podiatrist number that the doctor gave me a few weeks ago (as it is no better), had a shower and just as I was taking my hair out of my towel, Grandma skyped me. We chatted for a while and then I spoke to Grandad. The phone rang while they were talking to me and I left them online while I answered. It was the Podiatrist. He asked for the best number to ring me on and I said SHALL I GIVE YOU MY CELL? I could hear Grandma giggling in the background and I knew I would be in trouble for speaking Canadian! When I hung up, she made fun of me and said that not only did I say a Canadian thing (Cell not mobile) but that I said it in a Canadian accent. I DID NOT! Anyway, I do have an appointment for next week to have my foot assessed and if I need orthotics, they will mould and make them for me.

I got on with painting the cupboards, unscrewing hinges, painting a bit, screwing up hinges, painting a bit more. It's getting there, however, it now shows up the horrible tiles on the splash backs. They are greeny yellowy, and the walls are a taupe. Something has to change.

I had my lunch, watched a bit of TV, put my feet up, tidied up the kitchen, made the Christmas cake. While I was in the basement looking for the tin for the cake, I noticed broken mugs on the floor, a fallen shelf and a lopsided cupboard. Ahhhh that's what the bang crash was last night. I cleared it all up, luckily there were only three broken mugs. Could've been a lot worse as there were mugs, glasses, vases and glass trifle bowls in there.

I left the cake baking and went upstairs to the caft room, finished off some Christmas stuff up there and skyped LizzieDotDot. I got to play 'noises' with Bernard. He is lovely.

By the time she went off and had her dinner and fed Bernard, it was time for me to take the cake out of the oven. It smelt delicious (even though I don't like it).

All ready for copious amounts of alcohol feeding.

I tidied up a bit on my craft table and got the Iibrary books together and went and fetched the boys from school. Smallest's teacher took me aside and said that next Thursday Smallest would get an award (I think for reading or leading I'm not sure which). I asked Smallest about his tissue and he was laughing because he couldnt bring it home as his teacher needed to use it! he he he. We got to the car and I realised I had forgotten the library books, so we drove home, collected the books and drove back to the library. We got some new books and came home. Small had homework which he moaned about a lot but got it done in the end. Smallest played on the IPad and then the three of us had dinner together. Huffle was due in later because he was interviewing, but in actual fact he came in earlier because he cut the interview short! Don't fancy their chances of getting the job!

I walked with Drew, came home, played on the Wii with the boys for five minutes and then it was bedtime. Huffle read to them and we tucked them in.

We played a couple of games of table tennis and I whooped Huffle's ass. He thinks he's so good but in reality, I am the king!!!!!!

Ugh-a-bug-a-tug-a-rug*

Another night's sleep broken by that bloody water softener. Huffle has now changed the time so we are hoping it will go off at 5am when I should be dozing nicely. Please work, I am soooo very tired.

Huffle went off to work, also tired because I woke him - sorry Huffle. Small went off to school. Smallest and I had breakfast together, got washed and changed and then played on the Wii - we played tennis and golf. We played a bit of table tennis and then Bop It - we did really well and got quite a high score as a team. By mid-morning (as I was starting to fall asleep) we decided to have lunch at the cafe on the Hamlet. Huffle wanted me to book his car in at the garage to get his winter tyres put on so I thought we could do that too. Smallest biked to start with. He has totally lost his confidence and insisted on me holding the back of his coat - I let to a few times but didn't tell him. He wobbled all over the place and his trainers kept slipping off the pedals. He got bored so went back and swapped his bike for his trust old scooter. He scooted far ahead of me which meant I had many chances to take photographs without him moaning at me. It was really foggy this morning.

Wintry fog over the field
Black squirrel running away from me and up a tree

Sumac trees in the fog

Oh look one of those seed heads again (I have been reliably informed by Mary Ann that this is a milkweed - go and have a look at her blog, there is a cool video to watch)

Love this tree - such great bark

When we were nearly there, we rang the school and asked if we could take Small out for lunch. They rang him and he was ready for us by the time we had walked there. He was very surprised and said it was a nice treat. we walked to the cafe, had lunch and then walked Small back to school. We had a quick chat to the Principal about snow in England and then walked backwards and forwards for about fifteen minutes looking for a glove I had lost - we found it eventually.

We booked Huffle's car in at the garage and walked slowly home.

The sun had come out, the fog had cleared and this was a picture of the same Sumacs with a glorious sky behind.

I took this photo by accident. Is that my halo?

Smallest's little legs were tired and I was just tired (have I mentioned that?). We skyped Moo on the way and showed her the field that they were going to build houses on and then we popped into the Royals. Smallest read a book to Mr Royal and I had a cup of tea with Mrs Royal.

Ugh-a-bug-a-tug-a-rug* was his favourite line to read from the book that the Royals gave him.

We left them and went home. We played some more Wii and table tennis and then Small came home. He wanted his friend to come over so he rang him, his mum brought mover and the three boys played in the basement (mainly in the Wii). They came up to the kitchen for a drink and then we all played Lego Creationary. I drove him home and the boys had their tea in front of Harry Potter II.

Huffle came home. I went for a walk with Drew and Mrs Royal. The moon was amazing.

We walked around the Hamlet looking at all the Christmas decorations.

I came home. The boys had finished their film and were watching TV. Small went and did a bit of homework in his bedroom and while Huffle and I had dinner, Smallest did a puzzle or two.
We have had lots of lovely comments from people wishing us a Happy One Year here. Thank you all, it has helped knowing you are there and commenting every now and then, some of you everyday. I hope we have been a little bit entertaining. Thanks also to those of you that have commented on the boys' blog - I never pushed them to write it today, if they want to, they will, it may be a two day short lived thing or an every now and then one. Who knows? I am trying to get Huffle to write one now too! (Editors note from Huffle - he is too tired to do that every day)

We have been here a YEAR!

I was reading the blog a year ago (I think we had been here only a week!) and I was missing the pan I cooked Smallest's egg in. Ahhh, at least I can laugh about it now. So how did I celebrate being here a year? I went for a walk in the forest with NoCustard, TeaLady, Drew and Mrs Royal. It was lovely. The sun was shining, it was a mere 8*. We did the same walk as last week, picked up some greenery, had a laugh and a good chat.

This was just taken in the car park before we even started. The clouds and the trees were amazing.
The walk ahead
I am always amazed at how tall and straight the trees are here
So many leaves
This branch hanging overhead reminded me of a bird
I love these seed heads (I know I take lots of pictures of these) - this too looks like a bird.
My walking buddies. Mrs Royal, NoCustard, Drew and TeaLady
(They always complain that I don't let them do their hair before I take a photo).
When we finished walking, Drew took us to a second hand shop to have a look around. Mrs Royal and I had no money with us so we kept saying "Drew, can we have some money please?". I bought a Christmas Tree stand, a gorgeous glass bauble, an angel for the tree and a couple of things for the boys (shhhhh).

We came home and I had lunch, skyped Moo (we laughed a lot but I can't even begin to tell you what we talked about. we have to have some secrets!), and then weighed all the ingredients for the Christmas cake and soaked the fruit in Brandy. I wish I liked this. It is purely for Moo, Huffle, the kids (if it is not too boozy) and any passing revellers.

Sultanas, raisins, currants, apricots, prunes, cherries, mixed peel, brandy, orange zest and juice

I swiffed all the floors, tidied, and then went and had an hour at my craft table. I finished my Christmas trees, tidied up and did a bit of blogging. HAPPY ONE YEAR.

The boys came home. They told me about their day. Small did some homework. Smallest and I played table tennis and skyped Grandma. Today we made pizza.

Huffle came home and we all ate. The boys blogged. They have created a blog (between them). It is called Small Halls Stall and you can find it here: http://SmallHallsStall.blogspot.com. Not a mouthful at all eh?

This is their profile picture and if you click this on my blogs it will take you there. It is all their own words. Obviously the IPad changes their spellings so it isn't quite their own spellings. I don't know if it is something they will do often but as they came in from school today, the first thing they wanted to do was to BLOG! Oh dear, what have I started?

Hufle took Small to the forest for the cubs night hike and Smallest and I played on the Wii. He almost beat me at Bowling. small has taught him exactly how to get a strike and he nearly always does get one. Then Smallest and I played table tennis while Huffle cycled. While Smallest cleaned his teeth, Huffle and I played table tennis. He won (of course!).

Huffle put Smallest to bed and read him a story and then went and picked up Small. I asked him to pickup Small today because I am not a fan of driving here into dark, especially near the forest. I'm glad I didn't go. Huffle sat in a forest, by himself, no lights, no people, just dark. I wouldn't have liked that!!

Small broke his torch. We need to get him another, the light wasn't strong enough anyway! He had fun. He heard Coyotes!!

As a mark of our 1st Anniversary here I am creating a new page (as if I don't have enough to write). It will be an English - Canadian Translation. Should be interesting.

Huffle keeps reading that the weather forecasters are predicting a hard winter. NO, PLEASE!!!!!

Huffle says on his first year here - it has been a very busy year with some ups and some downs, learning lots of things. It has been a year of newness.

What does a dodant do?

Today, one year ago, we had a leaving party at Grandma and Grandad's. I was reading back this morning on earlier blog posts. It makes interesting reading.

I'm glad Helen (I'm a Celebrity) listened to me yesterday and pulled her socks up and got on with the task. She did a fabulous job. Now I'm wondering, did she put it on before or has she really just turned over a new leaf? Whatever it is, it makes it a damn site more entertaining and for that I thank you.

Huffle and Small left for work/school and Smallest had a bath while I had a shower. When I came out of the shower I heard a beep beep beep beep beep. I shouted to Smallest WHAT IS THAT NOISE "oh it's the smoke alarm" he said, happily pouring water from one cup into another. WHAT? I ran downstairs and found I had left the kettle boiling (without the whistle down), it had burned dry and was starting to burn the bottom of the kettle. OH MY GOD. What is wrong with me? I could've set the house on fire! I had to throw the kettle away, thank goodness it wasn't the new one we just bought for the new Cooker!

Smallest cuddled up to me today and said "What is that smell under your armpit Mummy?" IS IT A NICE SMELL OR HORRIBLE? "nice" he said. OH WELL THAT'S MY DEODORANT THEN! "What does a dodant do?" IT STOPS ME SMELLING BAD!

Smallest and I went out and did a quick shop. He was very helpful. Then we went to the Post Office to post two letters and a small parcel. We bumped into 'Sporty Spice' which was lovely because we haven't seen her for ages. She called Smallest a 'Cutie Patootie'. He has been saying it all afternoon. We promised to pop round for a cup of tea soon.

We came home. Had lunch, skyped Moo, put the shopping away and I started on my Vegetable Lasagne for the Garden Club's Pot Luck Dinner. I have heard there will be wine there and I have already been offered a lift - Phew!

Small and I played 3D Snakes and Ladders and did a puzzle and then he helped me make Meatballs. Small came home and did his homework. The boys played on the Wii and I joined them briefly. Huffle came home early. All the boys had their dinner while I finished cooking my lasagne. I have run out of foil and have no idea how I am supposed to keep it covered and hot until I take it to the Royals who are giving me a lift.

Small carried on with a bit more homework, Smallest got ready for Beavers. I made myself look gorgeous (okay so I did nothing much!).

Huffle took Smallest to Beavers with Small in tow. I walked to the Royals carrying my heavy Lasagne which I stupidly made in my really heavy lasagne dish and then put the dish in a really heavy duty tin with a tin lid. Doh. Mr Royal drove us there (Mrs Royal, myself and Drew). There was a really big table set up with a Christmas tablecoth, centre pieces of greenery and candles, a big table where the main food was being put, another with lovely desserts, a soup and a chilli.

There were lots of rice dishes - all very nice and very different, a chickpea curry, potato dish, Greek salad, a lovely orzo salad (from Mrs Royal), some meat dishes. I asked what was what so I would know what I could eat and I was told 'that probably doesn't have meat in it, that's chicken so that's alright, I doubt that's got meat in'. It was obvious that I was the only Vegetarian there. In the end, someone got up and asked if each dish had meat 'because we have a Vegetarian here!' IT'S NOT A DISEASE! One woman said to me, I've only just put the bacon in at the end so you could pick it out. NO I COULDN'T!

The food was lovely. I sat with Mrs Royal, Drew, Mr Royal, a welsh woman and a woman who was born in England and her husband who wasn't. The wine flowed well thanks to Mr Royal. There was a silent auction. All the things were beautifully presented, baskets, bird houses, tea caddies, ornaments, tea cups, scarves, lots of different things. The bidding had to start at $2 and go up in increments of $2. I didn't bid on anything, there were lots of elements of different baskets I liked but nothing I wanted to pay much for overall. Then there was the raffle. You bought raffle tickets and put them in a pot next to thing you wanted to win. Again they were beautifully presented, wrapped in cellophane and bows. I didn't win anything. I wanted the one with the pretty teapot in.

They picked out people's names for the table decorations, there were lots of thank you'd and a run down of what will be happening at the Garden club next year.

We all picked up our pots (mine was very nearly all gone) and I got a few people tell me the Lasagne was very nice. One woman asked me how I made it.

Mr Royal drove us home. The back door was locked but all the lights were on. Huffle said he wasn't going to bed before I got in but he was nowhere to be found. I went upstairs and found him in the bath watching Taladega Nights (a will ferrel comedy), sweet wrappers on the side (a Werthers, a Murray mint and 2 jammy dodgers), there was also a teaspoon on top of the toilet. WHAT IS THE SPOON FOR? I asked. "Oh I had a mousse". IN THE BATH? "No, while I was waiting for the bath to fill up". I tell you, he lives the high life.

We are sitting in bed watching I'm a Celebrity on YouTube - thank you YouTubers, sipping tea and eating Drew's lemon squares. Ummmmmmm.

Smallest has decided he wants his own blog. I am considering creating them a blog between them, that they can add to when they like. WATCH THIS SPACE. they will probably get more followers than me!

Spaghetti, Sunshine and Santa

Huffle and I watched "I'm a celebrity" last night. Will someone please put Helen out of her misery. What did she expect? Get her out, she is not entertaining!!

I woke up again just before 2am - that bloody noisy water softener and sump again, put my headphones in and listened to Miles Kane, good album but didn't cover the 'noise', so I ended up going downstairs and reading some of The Hobbit. It was about 3:30am before it stopped and I went back to sleep. AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

We got up this morning, had a quick breakfast, washed and changed and were out the door by 10am - not bad for us. We had our hats, gloves, scarves, coats etc just in case. Today was the Toronto Santa Parade.

Pair of sillies
The drive was quiet due to the fact that the boys were listening to their MP3 players, the traffic wasn't too bad and we found a cheap parking spot on the waterfront.

Hello sailors
We walked to St Lawrence Market and watched the people already lining the streets though it was three hours away, sitting there with their fold up chairs, blankets and cups of coffee - they had a long cold wait!

Toronto buildings
More buildings and look at that sky - it's November!
We then had dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory which is an eccentric restaurant which has an old tram carriage in it and huge stained glass lights. The food was tasty and filling, perfect preparation.

Apparently the two lions, outside of this hotel Downtown, are copies of the ones that stand outside The British Museum, London, England.

Hockey Hall of Fame

We found a good place to sit until the parade came past. There were people lined up for miles. The crowds were about six deep. All of a sudden, people rushed into the middle of the road and all those people that had camped there for hours to get the best spot, were pushed aside. However it did mean that our boys got a spot right at the front (well when other people weren't pushing them and standing in front of them).
Many many many people

The boys were watching a window cleaner cleaning some windows very very high up (they were also laughing because he was splashing lots of water on people and we could see it happening before the unsuspecting public felt it!).

Food vans lining up to feed the hungry

The parade soon started. The kids collected high fives. Lots of marching bands.......

Lots of clowns and floats...

Lots of people dressed as animals....

Mounties, snowmen, gingerbread men, teddies....
There was one little incident where some kids were driving these little cars and one of them knocked a Marshall over. She stumbled, fell and then couldn't get up for ages. She got a round of applause when she got up and walked courageously away. It was quite funny.
...........And at the end, Santa with his reindeer. We couldn't quite see the kids faces but I could see them looking at each other. They absolutely loved it.

We were cold, achey, the boys had cold bottoms from sitting on the road, my foot hurt, Huffle's back hurt from standing too long and joints ached from too much leaf raking yesterday.

We walked back down towards the waterfront, stopped at a cafe and had a hot drink and biscuit. Then we made our way back to the car, and attempted to find our way to the correct road. It was tough going because my sat Nav took us the wrong way (or Huffle ignored it) but Huffle used his inbuilt map and got us on our way. The traffic was bad but we got home eventually.

Small had a shower. Huffle and I put all outerwear away and then we played Table Tennis to get warm, smallest joined us.

When small came down, the boys had their tea and we all watched a bit more of Harry Potter.

We attempted to watch the Santa Parade in the TV but quickly turned it off - very cheesey. We had a lovely day today. It was planned well by us before hand so we wouldn't have to walk for miles, get grumpy and not know where we were eating etc.

A year ago today, we left our lovely little house in The Village, England. Our furniture had been taken the day before, Huffle and Small stayed at Grandmas and Smallest and I stayed at Moo's. we told the boys today we were celebrating our first year here as they would be at school and Huffle at work when the proper day arrived.
