Surprise Surprise

Today I decided to make Jamie Oliver's American pancakes. 6 eggs (separated) and 230g flour, 280ml milk and two teaspoons of baking powder. They were a bit dry but I like the idea of cooking one side and just before flipping putting blueberries/strawberries/chocolate chips etc on. Just scrumptious as the fruit turns to a warm jam and the chocolate chips just melt beautifully. (Not all on together, each pancake had a separate fruit). I will try a different recipe next time and see if the fruit still stays in enough. Separating and folding in the eggs is just a bit too faffy for a hungry family first thing.

We skyped Grandma and Grandad today and got to speak to HB and Aunt Pear. They are having a fabulous time in New York for HB's 21st. We had a tour of the house and watched Grandmas bottom climb the stairs - NICE. Afterwards we got in the car and drove to Stouffville Country market. We wanted some specific items which we bought (shhhhhhh) and also got a couple of plants, some carrots and peaches.

We had a nice leisurely lunch in town and then popped to the Community Sports Playing Field where we were hoping to find the cricketers playing to see if we could sign the boys up for practice. However after Huffle surveyed the area he found a crude matting pitch as found in India and Pakistan. There was not a cricketer in sight. Footballers, baseballers but no cricketers. We came home and found a bushel of pears outside our door (surprise no1) thanks to our neighbour who gave us the apples yesterday. Small and I went to take their basket back and they gave us a jar of Pear Jam (surprise no2) to try. As soon as the Butternut Squash is ripe we can have some of the too.

We all trekked off to the nearest forest for a walk. There were many bugs and mosquitoes. Smallest found several frogs and a huge toad. I walked through a spiders web and didn't like it at all. We had a nice walk and came home.

Huffle forgot to take his mushroom identifying book which is a shame because we found a lot.

Huffle and I put our new plants in :- weigela, flox, hosta and baneberry, then moved a few plants and Small watered for us. The boys went and played on the trampoline and we attempted to rescue the pool as it had turned a bit green (surprise no3) and the skimmer basket was full to the brim with leaves (surprise no4). This is possibly due to the big storm and heavy rain last night.

The surprises didn't stop there though as after we had vacuumed, netted the leaves, swept away the deck leaves and went to add chlorine and bromine to the pool, I opened the lid and saw a big leaf in the chlorine bucket. I pushed it aside to get a scoop of chlorine and then realised it wasn't a leaf but a mouse. A dead flat mouse. Huffle thought it had been packaged in there because it was flat but I think it crawled in there and poisoned itself. Oh dear. I think that was the last of our surprises for the day except that when we unwrapped our peaches we found them to be a little squashed too!

Currently living it up in New York with HB, Aunt Pear and CousinPest, Grandma and Grandad will be flying from NY to Toronto for a three week visit with us in just three days time. Apparently Aunt Pear needed to know when she would be getting rid of them!
